Why is lighting important?
The purpose of lighting is to guide the audience, draw their attention and change their reaction to what’s happening on stage.
Lighting for an event can serve two main purposes:
Visibility: Presenters, lecturers, singers etc need to be clearly visible by the audience. Smooth white spotlights will make them stand out and have the audience’s attention focused on them.
If they can be seen clearly, they can be heard also. Further more there might be objects on the background set that need to be lit such as Logos , lettering , brands, sponsors.
Mood or atmosphere: Lighting can transform a plain surface. An artistic lighting design with the use of intelligent lighting, up lighters, colour filters, will create the desired mood. The example of the following pictures shows how different a background looks when lit.
